The float process was developed by the Pilkington Group in 1952 and is now an international standard for production of high quality glass. A careful mixture of lime, sand, soda and dolomite is melted at a temperature of 1600 ° C and comes in a bath of molten tin : the glass floats on the tin and becomes an equal polished layer. Glass thickness is determined by the speed of the belt.
